TORONTO - A year after being forced to cancel a stop in Vancouver, Virgin Festival organizers have rolled out an ambitious schedule for this summer.

The organizers announced plans Wednesday to bring the outdoor music festival to cities in five provinces - Quebec, Nova Scotia, Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario.

Though expanding the event in the current economy may be risky, Virgin Festival director Andrew Bridge insists he's not worried.

"We're taking a bit of gamble going out and doing five festivals, but we're confident that we're delivering a smart ticket price with amazing talent and a great experience for festival-goers,"
Bridge said Wednesday.

Montreal will get the first in the series of shows on June 19 and 20 at Parc Jean-Drapeau. The lineup includes Grammy Award-winning hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas, Montreal pop-punk band Simple Plan, soul crooner Akon, New Kids on the Block, Hedley and Live, with more performers to be announced.

"We tailor the lineups (for) each market," Bridge said. "The festival . . . in Montreal is a bit of a pop event. You'll see variances in the talent in different markets. You'll see different styles in the different cities."

Those cities and the lineups for each show will be announced soon, Bridge said.

Last year, shows were held in Toronto and Calgary. A planned third stop in Vancouver was scrapped because organizers said they couldn't secure top acts to anchor the two-day fest.

"We said we're not going to do a festival unless we have the talent, the venue and all the logistics in a way in which we're comfortable and confident to deliver a fabulous festival,"
Bridge said of the cancelled show.

"That's why we said in Vancouver last year the stars didn't align. (But) we wouldn't be doing one in B.C. (this year) if we weren't very confident with the lineup details that will be forthcoming."
